Reading is a great past time, right? Well, not so much in my household! I have four boys, one of which is a pre-teen and one teenager that cringe anytime I mention reading. I used to read to them when they were little, they loved story time. They would chant for “more books, more books!”
When they got a little older, we had the excitement of learning how to read that kept them looking forward to the next book challenge. Then everything fell off. For a long time, I couldn’t figure out what to do to get my kids to LOVE reading, or for that matter, read at all. Until I realized it wasn’t necessarily reading they didn’t like, rather the books I picked out.
So I was off on a new journey. Try to find the best books for boys. I thought it would be easy. There are sooooo many great books out there. No worries, right? Oh man, this task was more daunting and expensive than I thought.
We tried the Dog Man and Captain Underpants Books that were great in gaining their interest but as a mom I wanted a little more reading, a little less comic book. Don’t get me wrong I love the fact it got my oldest to read at all, and how to read dialogue at that, but it was time to set up it. We had tried the Wings of Fire Series (which I have heard great things about) but it was almost too intense of a read.
Then……I stumbled across the first Quest Kids book a couple of years ago when I was aimlessly searching Amazon late one night. It was a great mix with a little bit of comic but majority (I’m not sure what you call it…. maybe…) traditional text! My oldest (now teen) LOVED IT!!

Yes, success! I had finally found something he had loved!
Well, not quit. While I still get the occasional moaning and groaning with the announcement of reading time, my two older boys actually enjoy their books. My thirteen-year-old was excited to hear there was a second Quest Kids book. He is now reading Quest Kids book number two and my eleven-year-old is reading Quest Kids book number one. When reading time is over, they are both excited to tell me what fantasy adventure happened today!! Huge step up!! I haven’t actually sat down and read the entire book only some bleeps here and there that the boys want to show me. The boys tell me that they are really, really funny and exciting. The adventures that the odd ball (friends) Quest Kids go on are crazy, weird and silly. They run into difficult adventures while on their Quest and have to use team work to overcome them.

Excited to announce that there is now a Quest Kids book number three! I just told my thirteen-year-old about it and he jumped up and said, “WHAT!”
Yep….success. If I can get a reaction like that about a BOOK then I am sold. We now have a tradition in our house that when they finish their book, I will buy them the next book in the series as reward. My oldest is looking forward to his next book and informed me he can’t wait to finish this book and start number three.
